Timing beats loyalty
In Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, petrol prices move in cycles. They jump sharply, then drift down over days or weeks. Filling up near the bottom of the cycle usually saves more than any loyalty discount.
- Watch the cycle. The ACCC publishes where each capital city is in its petrol price cycle.
- In WA, check tomorrow. Retailers must lock in tomorrow's price by 2:30pm, so you can see whether it's cheaper to fill up today or wait.
- Independents are often cheaper. Compare a few stations near you, not just your usual brand.
- A few cents adds up. On a 50 litre tank, 10¢ a litre is $5 a fill, or about $260 a year if you fill up weekly.
Where these prices come from
Retailers in most states must report their prices to a government scheme, and we show that data as it’s published. Prices are refreshed through the day; Victoria’s are published a day late by design.
